Departments
The Civil Division of the City Attorney’s Office is responsible for providing advisory and transactional legal support, which includes preparing opinions, contracts, deeds, ordinances, and resolutions. The Division also defends and prosecutes civil actions on behalf of the City.
The City Manager is responsible for carrying out the council-created policies, and directing the day-to-day operations of city government. The manager reports directly to the city council, and is subject to council performance reviews. The City Manager is responsible for drafting a balanced budget for council review and approval each year.
The Internal Auditor's mission is to provide independent, objective, accurate, and timely auditing services that are designed to improve operations, cultivate transparency, and accountability.
The City Clerk, appointed by the City Council, serves as the city’s official records custodian.
The Surprise City Court handles cases ranging from minor traffic violations to Class 1 misdemeanors that carry a maximum penalty of six months in jail and/or a $2,500 fine, plus surcharges. The Court is a separate branch of city government and a part of the statewide court system, subject to the authority of the Arizona Supreme Court.
The Surprise Community Development Department strives to provide the very best level of service related to planning, permitting, and building safety elements within the City of Surprise.
